Kobe Bryant Fined $100k for Calling Referee Bennie Adams a “Fucking Fag”

Kobe Bryant was fined $100k, yes, $100,000, by the NBA for using an anti-gay slur towards NBA referee, Bennie Adams, during last night’s game against the Spurs. Kobe called him a “fucking fag.” David Stern commented,

Kobe Bryant’s comment during last night’s game was offensive and inexcusable. While I’m fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated. … Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society.

Allen Iverson was fined $5,000 for saying the same thing to a fan back in 2001. Now, even though Allen Iverson’s issue was 10 years ago, that is still a 2000% increase. The normal annual inflation rate is only 2-4%. Maybe since Kobe’s comment was towards a referee, and Iverson’s comment was towards a fan, it demanded a higher fine. Referee’s are more important than fans, I guess. Was it because Kobe’s outburst was caught on tv? ..maybe they should stop zooming in at players that are obviously pissed off?

Back in 2009, Kenyon Martin was caught on camera, using the same anti-gay slur that Kobe used, towards Mark Cuban, and I don’t remember him getting fined.

Kobe makes about $300,000 per game so that fine only costs him about 16 minutes of “work,” and it is tax-deductible since it’s a charitable donations. Charles Barkley said this about fines, “I don’t care about fines, because they’re tax-deductible.”
